Too Self Indulged

Last night I saw Mindless Self Indulgence and I was really excited to see them. It was just nice to see all the punk kids out, that are often shafted in this town when it comes to chances to see bigger artists that interest them. MSI has been around for years have gained quite a semi-underground following. I remember a few years ago they played several nights at Irving Plaza and sold them all out before I got a ticket, so last night was my first time seeing them. I am a fan of their new album, however, I am not a fan of their live show. First off, the singer thinks he is a god ... Exemplified by the back of his jacket which stated, "We Are Gods" (I wish I had a picture). He would do very obnoxious, and by obnoxious I do not mean gross/sexual/obscene - more crude/cocky, innuendos. An example of this is that he walked around the crowd looking for "the ugliest" person so he could "stick his tongue down their throat". Anyhow, the music they were playing was good... Until on closer look, it appears that everyone is pre-recorded except for the singer. This may be false information, but I believe it to be true. Here are some photos.

MSI's arrogance is fed by their worshiping crowd.
People treat them like Gods, so they [in turn] act like Gods.
It's not cocky. It's accommodating.

Many people try to achieve goals. Most fail. Some strive, work hard and plan for all the details yet they achieve little or nothing at all. Others strive, work hard, plan and achieve huge success. Yet there are a few individuals who do little else than take small steps and seem to achieve a great deal with what seems like effortlessness. What is the difference between these people and which one would you like to be?
Most members of the human race fall into two categories - those who live in the past and those who live in the future. Most live in the past. Many of these are the people who achieve very little in their lives and are so fearful of the future that they dare not strike out to get anything. They are the under-achievers who hang onto bad episodes in their lives and either relive them time and again or look at new situations as similar potentialities. They say things like "all men are deceivers" or "all women are interested in is money" or "I can't do it. I tried before and it didn't work so why bother!". Due to bad experiences in the past they believe that all future events will turn out the same way if they dare to go after what they want.
The other type of person lives in the future. This type tends to create more of the things they want in life. They have a vision of where they want to go and exactly how they are going to get there. They work diligently at making concrete plans and they pursue those plans with a persistent ferocious appetite for success. These people are the high achievers - The Richard Branson and Bill Gates of the world. These people have much to teach us about setting and achieving goals.
However, there is a third type of person who almost goes unnoticed. They are the person who takes life in its stride and yet achieve most of what they want. I am sure you know of such a person in your life that just seems to saunter through life and yet they always come out on top. Or a person who you hear of that has decided to open a shop. You meet them a few months later and they have three shops all doing well! So what makes these people so successful and if they aren't living in the past and aren't living in the future where are they living?
I suppose you guessed it! Whether they are consciously aware of it or not they are living in the present. It is in the 'living' present that we have our greatest power. Everything happens in the present. You live your entire life there - even if your mind does not!

By becoming more aware of the present and by 'accepting' it as it is we are much more in control of our emotions and focus. When we live in the past we are fearful of making bad choices and/or getting hurt. We do not wish to recreate the past again! When we live in the future we can also be fearful of what might happen. But even if your future vision is full of power and worthy of working towards many people can, and often do, get stuck there. By constantly reaching for bigger and better goals they fail to enjoy what they have in the moment.
If you wish to start living a life that is almost effortless begin first by living in the present. Accept your situation the way it is and then you can enjoy what you have. Your focus changes from a memory of what was or a vision of what might be to a realization of what is. You become much more empowered to then see the beauty of life and also look at where you wish to make changes. But to make changes you must first accept the situation as it is. Trying to escape from your present only increases your focus on your problems by creating resistance to what is. Accept your life as it is now. Make no judgement, just accept it and then you will be free of doubt, worry, pain and fear. For you only experience these things when you live outside the 'moment'. personal-development.info

You have to understand, Obnoxiousness is what MSI is all about. Little Jimmy has said numerouse times that his goal during a show is to get someone pissed off enough to hit him.

Most of his arrogance is when he is making fun of other people. The we are gods is in referrence to all the other bands who act like they are gods just because they are in a band, plus they are gods.
Just my opinion.

Hi, I'm an old fan of Mindless Self Indulgence. I wanted to say that, while reading this, frankly, I was appalled.

Jimmy is one of the sweetest, most intellectual men I've ever known, and you're taking his schtick far too seriously

His "ego" and "crude" behavior is what you pay for when you watch the show. I mean, c'mon, if you like MSI, you've heard the lyrics. How could that NOT suggest this behavior would occur?

MSI is about acceptance. If you can accept their lyrics, you sure as hell should be able to accept their comedy.

I'm sorry I respond so strongly, but I think you've completely misjudged Jimmy and have forgotten the whole point of the band: a joke.

I like Jimmy. I think he rocks.

And it says "Cocky" right across his pants in the front(which, by the way, are hilarious and quite similar to Ville Valo's coat with all the weird writing on it). And I think its awesome how they think so highly of themselves. They have a good view of life, at least.

Mindless Self is facking hiliarous, and you're completely devoid of creativity. I've been to a few, and they're all fucking obnoxious. That's MSI, have you heard the lyrics?

As for the guy trying to write a college thesis in a music blog, here's the real answer: there IS two kinds of people, everyone, and then the facking idiots who think there's only two types of people.

Cocky bands are the ones that even if you get backstage, won't talk to you unless your fake tits are falling out of your shirt.
Nearly every time I've gone to see mindless, they hang out with the croud talking and signing shit untill well after most other bands would have left the building.
As for everyone being pre-recorded, I think you're full shit. A lot of the beats are pre-recorded, that is because they are electronic beats. Kitty plays drums along side and does it well.
These are just wierdos having fun and making money at the same time, if you don't understand that they are just entertaining themselves you don't get the full impact of the show.

Well here's what I think... if you don't like them, great, don't listen. but don't get pissed because someone else is getting paid for being themselves.... you just wish you were as interesting as them to do so.

as for the haters... get over it... their getting paid more... your not.

Mindless Self Indulgence is basically a comedy act. They're consider themselves a parody of all those other bands that THINK they are gods and THINK that they are better than everyone else because that's how fans see them. MSI is VERY different. If you had stuck around till after the show, you would have realized this. I've seen them twice and both times I've talked to the band

...(I accidentally posted before I was finnished)
Anyway, I've talked to the band and they are SO down to earth and don't think of themselves as celebraties or even popular. They just like rocking out and being absolutly rediculous, and meeting a lot of new people. Jimmy isn't at all cocky like you think he is. It's part of the show. He's actually just a really nice guy from Brooklyn doing what he loves: making fun of the Industry.
